Risk: Extreme – Bullet Resistant Glass

Bullet Resistant Glass, commonly known as BR Glass, is used in areas of Very High Security, especially for where the threat of fire arms is prevalent. It is important to note that BR glass is not designed to withstand a physical attack with hand tools, although some BR glass types could also act as a medium security Intruder Resistant glass. BR glass is specially designed to encapsulate exceedingly high velocity projectiles without allowing penetration through the panel. Glass thicknesses range from 20mm – 65mm depending on the type of fire power being resisted.

Where to use it?

This is generally in areas where large amounts of cash are stored or handled on a daily basis.
These areas include banks, ticketing booths, petrol stations and casinos. Other areas such as Prison visiting quarters and Court houses where high profile personnel may be present are areas where BR Glass may be applicable.

Once the level of firepower is determined, the AS/NZS2343:1997 Bullet Resistant Panels
and Elements Standard should be referred to and the correct classification specified.
It is imperative that all areas around the glass panel are also built to withstand the same firepower, including the frame and walls. Specially designed speaker panels are available for use in areas where an intercom is not used. Effective and guaranteed security in ‘a worst case scenario’ should always be the primary goal. Short cuts taken to save costs can lead to a failure in real life situations.
